It's a long story, but the TLDR is that we found 8 puppies and 3 adult dogs (including the mother) that had been chained up in the woods behind
  • 03
our house with inadequate food or water. Its looks like someone in a bad situation stashed them there and was not adequately caring for them.
  • 04
We're working with animal control to figure out what is happening with the dogs next, but for the next few days at least we'll be caring for the mother and
  • 05
her puppies. I have 2 adult pit mixes, but this is my first time caring for puppies, so any advice is helpful! So far the puppies
  • 06
look relatively healthy, and they look to be about 5-6 weeks old. They have all their teeth. There are two that are smaller and less developed than the
  • 07
others. So far we've given mom and the puppies a calm and clean place to relax and the puppies are in a XL crate with open access to an X pen for running

around. Most of my questions revolve around general feeding/ caring. They still want to feed from mama,
  • 10
but I believe at this age they can start eating dry food. Given their uncertain past, I'm leaning toward letting them still feed from mom,
  • 11
but supplementing with dry food as well. They seem to be able to eat it just fine. I'm having a hard time finding consensus on the

right amount to give them, and I don't want to overfeed them, but I also think they have likely been underfed since mom didn't have free access to them
  • 13
before. Right now we have mom separate from them (she was worn out and her teats were all scratches and bit up from 8 hungry puppies trying to

feed. Our current plan is to do a couple feeding with mom per day where we lay her down and let 4 puppies at a time feed for a few
  • 15
minutes, and then give them dry food 3x per day as well. Does anyone see any problems with this at their age?
  • 16
Since we may only have them for 2-3 days we're don't doing vet visits or anything yet, so Im mostly just looking for advice and best practices on feeding, cleaning, watering

EDIT: Hey everyone, just wanted to update and say thank you for the help. We're still fostering mom and

the 8 pups (holy st it's a lot of work) and everyone is doing great! Our lives basically revolve around them for the moment, but that's ok, they're all

amazing. They've all been officially registered with the local rescue and were va _d and dewormed and treated for fleas. The
  • 21
puppies were FULL of worms, so once the horror show of worm filled puppy pp commenced they were able to start eating better and have started

growing a lot. Their first check in is next week and we believe they'll probably be ready to go on to other fosters and put up

for adoption. We're going to continue to foster mom (and maybe a pup if I'm allowed) and make sure they get really good homes.
