Boss emailed me about not adhering to the 9-5 schedule. Here is my timecard.

I notice that you sometimes leave work before 5:00 PM on days that I am in the office. Please remember that our standard office working hours are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and you are expected to manage these times by carefully clocking in and out to this time schedule. If you are worried about mismanaging your time, you can clock in slightly early and clock out slightly late to secure your 80 hours, as long as you begin work at 9:00 AM and remain at work until 5:00 PM. Thank you for your understandin

I have to clock in and out at work, so there is very clear documentation of my timecard and I was diligent about making sure I'm always at exactly 40 since it's a nonprofit and they told me they do not want to pay overtime. The hours are 9-5 but I didn't realize they literally meant to the minute. I'm not in a role that is customer facing, or in needed shift coverage, it's just a regular desk job. I have no idea why they need to be this strict about the time other than control. It's ridiculous.

Azdaja Aquillina In my experience, the management does not give. a sh if you are in early or stay late by a few minutes. But boy will they notice if you clock out at 4:57. Fact of life.

Successful-Medicine9 I love how you are given permission to work a few extra minutes each day lol. How generous! If you are hourly (in the US), then you can count all of the time over 40 as overtime. If you are salaried, this boss is simply asking to clock in at exactly 9 and out at exactly 5.

T-Wrox Je is Chrt. I don't give a sh how much you're getting done, or the quality of your work, or how you get along with other staff, just make sure you punch in and out at

least one minute before nine and one minute after five (but you're not getting paid for those extra 10 minutes). Way to focus on what matters, Micro-managing boss!

Destroy Yesterday Had a manager like this once. Was for a call center job. Basically gave me this same convo as you OP. My response was "okay, I'll clock in at 9 and be late to getting my system up to take calls." (I

had been clocking in at 8:55 so I was ready for calls at 9 as was instructed by my trainer.) My boss never bothered me again about it.

Pope_adope I hate when employers micro- manage time like this. I regularly get hour totals like 39.97 or 40.05 and it's of absolutely no concern to my current employer. My last job spoke to me about being a

minute or two late despite me making the time up later, and it's just frustrating to deal with and a waste of energy and attention that could be better spent actually managing things that matter

PimoCrypto777 Said you need to remain at work until 5pm. Nothing about working till 5pm. Make 2pm-5pm your remain time.

RussellGrey Perfect example of stupid people having access to too much information.

Swiftraven Clock in exactly at 9 and out exactly at 5. Seems easy enough. Do not stay late, especially if salaried. If he you tell him you are adhering to his 9-5 instructions.

dirtyitalianguy Bosses who watch the clock and micro manage their people like this are often terrible managers and don't trust them to do work. Good managers empower their team and promote growth

and ensure they have what they need to be successful. This sh is busy body work and is a waste of company resources doing it on a weekly basis.

Maerzgeborener "you can clock in slightly early and out slightly late. But 9 to 5 are fixed" Is he stupid?
  • 20
ryneo0w0 So they want you here 9-5, they tell you you can be a few minutes early or a few minutes late, but you still have to be there 9-5. So, you cant really clock in early or clock out late as they say, because those times are outside 9-5. Stupid manager

Cuneus-Maximus I would reply with this and state that you do clock in a few minutes early as they suggest to ensure you start at 9am. Ask directly if they would have preferred you did not clock out until 5pm or a

few minutes after as they also suggest, and incurred overtime. Force them to decide - carry on making sure your timecard is exactly 40 hours/week or start incurring overtime to follow their ask. They can't have it both ways.

Somedaydreamer22 Cue malicious compliance. Won't start doing a single thing until clock in at 8. Will clock out at 5 even if last task isn't completed.
