Diners refuse to pay after waiter tries to switch their cash payment to credit card: 'There's some kind of promotion or something'

It's always wise to pay attention to the check.

Some may be tempted to let the details slide when they have enjoyed a good meal at a restaurant and are ready to leave. In doing that, though, they may not realize that some things are amiss. Mistakes can happen, sneaky extra charges can be added, and people can even try to scam you by betting on the fact that you are not going to scrutinize the numbers too closely.

The reality is that there are plenty of establishments and individuals who work for them that will happily take as much money from you as they can get away with, and not always by honest means. Nobody wants to go out to enjoy themselves and then wind up being swindled, but it is not totally uncommon.

In these scenarios, the person knowingly adding extras to the bill is depending on you not putting up a fight. For some personalities, it can feel awkward to speak up about such things, but it is the right thing to do if you value not paying for what you didn't expect to. These are the times when harnessing your inner Karen can be a good thing.

  • In this story, a group of colleagues had a good time going out to eat at a restaurant, where the cost was going to be comped by the company. Everything seemed to be completely normal until they got the check, which claimed that they would be paying with a credit card, although they had stated that they would be paying cash.

    One of the employees flagged this with the server, who claimed that it was a kind of promotion that the restaurant was doing. They didn't believe him and asked for the manager, but felt guilty that they may have jeopardized the server's job.

    Last night I went to a work dinner with some of my colleagues to celebrate some project we just finished (the company has allocated some budget for it). We have a really nice experience there and the foods and services are great too.

When we confront the waiter they told us that they use they're own credit card because there's somekind of promotion or something. And we can just pay with cash as we wanted.

  • So, we refuse to pay, both because now on the receipt written "payment option: credit card" also on the bottom there is a membership point & cashback gained. I just don't want to explain this convoluted stuff to our finance team and simply refuse to pay until the receipt is changed and ask for the manager.
