Football Stadium Food Fails I Wouldn’t Celebrate the World Cup With

The 2026 World Cup kicks off today, which means billions of people around the world are about to experience the most sacred ritual in football: paying an absolutely criminal amount of money for food that looks like it was prepared by someone who had heard of cooking but never actually tried it

We're not here to talk about goals or tactical masterclasses. We're here to talk about a different drama, the culinary tragedy that unfolds every matchday at stadiums across the globe. The World Cup may be the pinnacle of the beautiful game, but stadium food? That's a beautiful disaster.

It doesn't matter if you're in a storied Premier League ground in London, a sun-baked lower-league venue in Australia, or a gleaming new billion-dollar World Cup stadium. The laws of stadium catering are pretty much universal, merciless, and apply equally to all nations. Mankind has put a rover on Mars, sequenced the human genome, and invented instant ramen. And still we are completely powerless against the rubbery hot dog bun, the burger patty that somehow manages to be both burnt and undercooked, and the cheese slice that appears to be made from some kind of petroleum byproduct.

The worst part isn't even the food itself. It's the fact that some of us still have hope. We stand in that queue for fifteen minutes, definitely always missing a goal, fueled by the delusion that this time it'll be different. This time the hot dog will be warm throughout. This time the bun will be bun-colored. You hand over the better part of a twenty, and reality reintroduces itself.

But the philosophically and gastronomically baffling truth is, we keep buying it. Every. Single. Time. Sports fans are some of the only consumers on earth with genuinely infinite brand loyalty toward products that consistently fail them. A football fan will complain about the stadium scran for thirty years and still order it at the next game without a second thought. Economists should study this. Therapists probably are.
