Pumpkin as a kitten behind his hooman father, Eddi
-
“In the summer of 2020, I made a trip to Walmart. On the way home through a residential area, I saw 3 boys chasing a young orange cat. One boy threw an empty water bottle at it. I thought to myself, "Oh, no, you didn't!" Another boy picked it up. Uncharacteristically for me, I stopped the truck and motioned the boy over. He came to the passenger window, and I asked him, "Is that kitten yours?" He said no. I then asked, "What are you going to do with that kitten?" He said, "We're just going to play with it." I then said, "Why don't you let me take that kitten? Just set him down here in the seat." He complied, and I rested my hand on the kitten, said, "Thank you," (because I'm a polite Southern lady) and drove off. When I arrived home, and walked in with an orange kitten under my arm, my husband said, "I thought you went to Walmart." I said, "I did, but..." and told him the story. So began our adventures with Pumpkin.”

I already know Pumpkin's story, but what is one weird, funny, or lovable thing they do every day?
"Pumpkin has the tiniest voice imaginable, especially for such a big cat (16 lbs). So when he wants to go out, he produces kind of a cross between a hiss and a spit. That's his term for "please open the door, Mom."

What is something Pumpkin helped you through?
“Pumpkin helped us get to know our next door neighbors in the house we were living in when we got him. He would greet them when they came home from anywhere, and accompany them into their house if they let him. They fell in love with him and gave him treats. I think he was unhappy when they moved away.”

What is Pumpkin's biggest “main character” trait?
“Pumpkin's main character trait is his greeting everything that moves across the property; people, deer, turkeys, other cats, whatever. He also plays with chipmunks; he will catch one, not hurt it, pick it up and carry it to a place of his choosing, set it down, wait while it hops a few feet away, go pick it up, set it down again, wait for it to hop away, pick it up. When he tires of that location, he'll carry it to another place and start the game over.”

Finish this sentence: “Rescuing/adopting Pumpkin changed everything because…”
“Rescuing/adopting Pumpkin changed everything because we had to learn how to manage a cat who only wants to be petted on his own terms. Seeing all that big, ginger plushiness makes one want to grab him up for a snuggle, but it won't end well if you do. But we love him, while restraining ourselves. He will come to us when he wants love. The picture I sent of my husband holding him was taken after Pumpkin got up on his computer desk and from there went to his chest, and let Eddie hold and snuggle him for a while, again, the time frame of his own choosing.”
