Is a free fence worth giving up part of your property?

A couple told their neighbors they couldn't afford to chip in $1,900 for a new shared fence, and thought that was the end of the conversation. Instead, they came home from work the next day to find the entire fence already torn down. Things got even messier when they checked their property survey and realized the replacement fence would actually sit almost a foot onto their land.

I have to admit, this is one of those stories where I kept waiting for someone to become the villain, but it never really happened. Everybody seems pretty reasonable here, which somehow makes the whole thing way more awkward.

The homeowners didn't say no because they hated the idea of a new fence. They simply couldn't justify spending nearly two grand on something that wasn't broken. Honestly, I think most people would make the same decision. If a fence is standing, doing its job, and not falling apart, dropping $1,900 on a replacement isn't exactly at the top of the priority list.

What would have bothered me, though, is coming home and finding the fence gone. Even if the neighbors were paying for everything themselves, that's the kind of thing I'd like a heads up about. At least let me mentally prepare before I pull into the driveway and discover my backyard suddenly has a whole new view.

Then the property survey enters the chat and turns a simple fence project into a full-blown property dispute. Because now it's not really about the fence anymore. It's about where the property line actually is.

  • Readers were eager to explain to the OP that they shouldn't let the neighbors cut into their deck. I must say, this sounds like a very complex situation with the other family, and as I mentioned above, no one is being disrespectful, which makes the situation ten times harder to fix.

  • In the end, I think that the most important thing to preserve is the relationship with the neighbors. It doesn't really matter whether it's the fence or the deck situation, but keeping a good bond with the people who live next to you is fundamental.
