Are dogs really just like our children?

As the dog people collective, we keep insisting that dogs are just like our children. But if I have to be honest, because as much as I love dogs, they're not like human children. They're similar in many aspects, that's true, but dogs are not people, and kids are not dogs. It doesn't make dogs less than; it doesn't mean that dog pawrents should love their dogs less - it just means they're different. That's all. But these differences demand a different approach to many situations a dog pawrent or a human parent might encounter.

For example, taking your kid to do grocery shopping with you is not the same as doing it with your dog. Sure, a kid might have a tantrum in the aisle over a "no" to chocolate, and they might make an unpleasant remark to a stranger. But a dog can shed fur into the produce, scare people who are afraid of dogs, and cause physical hardship if a person nearby is allergic. These are all many things dog pawrents should consider, which the comment section explained repeatedly on u/RobClark_NY's post - where they posted their puppy inside a grocery cart. People had a lot to say about it.

Now, the puppy looks cute and happy. But the fact that they're cute doesn't mean dogs should be inside grocery stores. No, society is not sterile - noise, disrespectful people, and car pollution all exist. But fur, dander, and fear aren't just "unpleasant" - they're actual health and safety risks to other people, and that's a line pet ownership shouldn't cross just because a puppy looks cute in a cart. It doesn't mean you love your dog less; it just means you're respectful to other people in a closed-off space.
