Care home coworkers refuse to believe employee even after being shown the resident's updated dietary file, only to learn the chef and nurse confirm they were right: 'Nobody apologized afterward'

  • Healthcare worker preparing a meal for an elderly woman at home.
  • I work in a care home that assists with the elderly, dementia residents etc. We have a system called a food passport where any dietary information is written down, allergies etc that gets updated monthly.
  • So during lunch service when I was busy serving food for the residents, one carer who takes the food to the residents, mentioned that one resident is a vegetarian who also doesn't eat eggs or fish when she saw the plate | had made up.
  • I replied no that information is outdated, she can eat eggs & fish, instead of admitting she was wrong & taking the food, she decides to argue with me about it, claiming she talked to the resident's daughter about it, when I showed her the file,
  • she was still adamant that I was wrong, demanded I go ask the chef to make a vegetarian dish for the resident as she refused to take the one I made up. The other carers heard us arguing about it, but they also refused to listen & took her side.
  • I showed them the file again, but they seem to think I was wrong, like I'm stupid, basically talked to me in a condescending tone.
  • At this point I'm getting really annoyed at them because this is delaying lunch, I'm trying to get service done as there's 25 residents to feed.
  • I told them if they don't believe me talk to the chef or the nurse on duty, but they seem to think I was trying to pass the blame onto someone else, even though there was no need to argue over a simple mistake.
  • They went & talked to the chef & nurse later who did show them the exact same file I did, I finished serving while trying not to lose my cool at being shouted at.
  • Afterwards they were just glaring at me but I spent the rest of my shift feeling ped off & frustrated. The 3 who argued with me went off to do personal care etc but nobody apologised or said anything afterwards.
  • Care home employee warmly greeting and holding hands with an elderly resident in a nursing home lounge, highlighting compassionate senior care, trust, and daily support.
  • I mentioned it to my manager who said he'd bring it up in the next morning meeting so maybe something will happen or get recorded as I gave my statement of what happened.
  • I try to get along, work together with people but it really wasn't necessary to shout at me, I know we can have bad days but I feel some of the people I work with think they're better than the kitchen/front of house staff or have issues at being called wrong & act childish over it & they're at least 30-40 years old.
  • Anyway rant over, hopefully they won't give me sh in my next shift.
  • Care home worker assisting elderly residents with an arts and crafts activity.
  • 11fingersinmydogsbum Sorry this happened. :[ Update us as things progress? I hope things work out.
  • Jerry_Hat-Trick I can understand a disagreement, but shouting just makes you an a hole. Good luck! Hopefully the meeting goes well.
  • Vegetable_Road8143 Honestly, the person could have taken it to their room and if they didn't want it, it comes back and they get the vegetarian plate. I know it's short staffed but it seems the longer they argue, the more work they're going to have to do to rush around.
  • Top-One2651 I understand what you are saying and that shouldn't have happened. But as someone who has worked in the geriatric population for 21 years, maybe that dementia patient decided right then that they didnt like those choices that day. Maybe they didn't remember liking those items and should have been offered something else. Just thinking outside the box.
