He's lucky he only had to retire 1 year early. Imagine if he had gotten laid off at 55! It would've been much harder for him to retire with 9 years less savings and investments.

I think a lot of people hold themselves back, even though they're capable of more than they think they are.
If they've been in a position of power for long enough, they've offloaded so much of their difficult work onto lower-paid employees for so long that they no longer know how to do things that challenge them and make them uncomfortable.
