Boss ambushes employee with a PIP, employee retaliates by resigning the next day

An employee hands their resignation letter to their boss

Unexpected PIP set me free y'all. I resigned.

This week I received a PIP. That wouldnt have been the last straw. But my boss brought me into his office with HR on the webcam, no prior warning or even discussing with me that he was unhappy with my performance. I walked in there, shocked because just three weeks ago I received
positive feedback and that I was doing a good job (this was what helped me hold on). In the PIP it said I needed to be helped too much (I thought this was funny because my boss always told me hes there to support me and I was never trained on anything. I basically thought myself the job.
I then resigned saying I wanted a career change and didnt elaborate. Then my boss asked me if theres anything he can do to make me stay. He was genuinely shocked i was resigning. I told him the job isnt for me and they need someone with more experience.
Yall i was so happy this morning I started blasting Staying Alive and danced with my 2 dogs urns in my room. I never felt okay like this in a long time. That PIP was a blessing. It gave me the courage to leave a toxic job. Just 3 days ago I prayed to God to make things better and the coincidence is crazy.

Commenters said that this was the right thing to do, and applauded the decision.

my_clever-name You escaped. The weirdness with the boss may be due to his boss not being happy with him. Or maybe they are downsizing. Best to you in your search for a new job.
Cultural-Answer-321 I love it when their power play backfires.
Traditional-Lie-3541 Good on you OP. Like over 80+% of PIPs are a farce. Best of luck where you end up next!

This commenter pointed out how backwards this line of thinking was.

BungABunBun Puts you on a PIP and then asks if they can get you to stay? ? "You put me on performance improvement plan, maybe figure out what you want instead of asking me"

There is a way to do a performance improvement plan, and a way not to do it.

Collin120423 For me to issue a PIP where I work you need to miss a specific metric for 4 straight months and you know where you stand at all times including a verbal warning after 3 months that "hey if you miss this again then you will be on a PIP next month". I truly don't understand these companies that just spring one on you out of no where
The things you'd have to do to be immediately put on a PIP or fired here you'd absolutely know you were in the wrong.

Some commenters shared their own stories on the thread.

StonkOBonko I crushed my number last year, literally best year in my 20 yr sales career and was put on a PIP Q1. I gathered my thoughts that night and quit the next day. They were SHOCKED. These companies cannot fathom that we don't need them. It was so satisfying.
Equivalent-Watch9744 Just receive the PIP, act like you care and follow it. Then when you get another offer just resign. Don't even put in a two week notice either

Some commenters gave ideas about how to retort.

Axentor At least tell him "I would rather work at a place that don't make up a PIP out of nowhere." I been at a place that would issue bogus PIP and use them to deny you a full pay increase or worse.
Dependent_Tune_1333 That's a terrible boss. You don't give some a PIP or a negative review without letting them know something is coming. You have, ahem, had terrible management. Good for you for getting out of there.
