When learning about Darwin's theory of evolution, you also learn about “altruism” - the act of doing something for someone else with no benefit to yourself. There is still a debate in the biological community about this fact, whether true altruism exists in the animal kingdom or not. Did Josie's daughters stay behind with her because of an altruistic desire to help their mother, or was there an ulterior motive there? Surely, surviving with a blind, senior lioness and hunting for her couldn't have helped Duffy and Dawn's survival, and yet, they did it anyway.
Unfortunately, we can't ask them why they did what they did, so we'll just have to make our own speculations. Maybe they found that they could hunt better and acquire more food and resources just the three of them, or purrhaps they found a way to use their mother's blindness to their advantage. Or, just maybe, they stayed behind with her simply because they didn't want to leave her behind.
