Stepmother refuses to pay for her step-daughter's ticket to an amusement park as she was ungrateful the last time, and she took it personally: ‘Apparently [the step-daughter] had ZERO idea what she said was so ungrateful’

  • I (50F) have been with "Peter" (54M) for 9 years. His daughter "Nellie" is nearly 19. Nellie's frivolous nature with my generosity started becoming a problem when she was 13, and this event was the last straw. Pretty much everyone I tell this story to agrees that my decision is fair, but also very In Sept '24, I took Peter and Nellie (turning 17), on a weekend trip to Halloween Horror Nights at Universal in California, then the next day was Disneyland. It was a whirlwind no sleep, carry-on bags

  • Two weeks later Nellie's mom bought her a ticket to a local haunted house with friends and a 'blind date' type of situation. Peter and I brought her and picked her up. We were asking her about her friends, the guy, how was the house, etc. She was hyper excited. Apparently they had a waiver that could be signed to allow being touched/grabbed by the scare actors. She thought it was awesome. That's when she said it. "It was SO MUCH better than Universal"

  • I glanced at Peter, who had a pained look on his face. I turned to look back at Nellie directly so she locked in that she was talking to the person that just took her on that trip. "Really?", I said. Nellie's eyes widened, "Oh, yeah!! SO MUCH better!", she said breathlessly. I paused and said "Understood", and I saw her eyebrows furrow, like she thought what I said was weird. I turned back to the front, again glancing at Peter, and he looked disappointed. Normally I broach difficult subjects and

All was derailed because Peter's dad unexpectedly went into the hospital and passed away within 3 weeks of that night. Fast forward and the first anniversary of his dad's passing was coming up and I said f it. "We're going to HHN again". We were going to Universal Orlando this time so we could also go to Epic Universe and I reminded hi

I had spoken with Peter several times about how disregarded I felt, so he was aware. Much later he told me that when Nellie found out we were going, she just assumed that she would go too but Peter told her "You might have if you hadn't said something so unbelievably r de and stupid to the person that paid for you to go" Apparently Nellie had ZERO idea what she said was s

She thinks that I don't like her because "OP is the ONLY one that is ALWAYS mad about stuff I say by accident!". She frequently gets ghosted by friends, I'm pretty sure this is why... And of course, if I'm the only one telling her directly when she's being inappropriate, she's going to think I'm the problem. This year Peter wants to pay to do the same tr

I figured out the schedule and costs, Nellie has agreed to pay for her tickets. A little later when Nellie's mom was coming to get her and Peter was out of the room, she asked me something about the amount for the rest of her travel portion. I said "You should ask him any money questions because I don't know what agreement there is between you

  • She paused and said "I have to tell you that I was kind of ped off that you went to Epic last year. I don't even know why you went since you didn't even watch How To Train Your Dragon. That was my thing with dad when I was little." "Well the park is more than just that one world, and he's the one who asked to go there" "I was still ped off" I figured that maybe she was trying to broach the subject and said "Nellie, you know why I didn't pay for you to go,

I want to get across that she doesn't get to continuously say incredibly hurtful things to people without consequences to the relationship.

  • Busy Shelter2695 She had a better time at the place with her friends and a huge adrenaline rush from being grabbed by actors. That's not an insult. Why are you mad about it?

  • BlazingSunflowerland I don't understand. This seems so juvenile on your part. She comes out of an event, all excited, and declares it to have been better than the one you went to previously. She should be allowed to have an opinion, and she should be allowed to be excited in the moment. I can't believe you are making such a big deal out of something so trivial. The big, expensive thing isn't always going to be the favorite or the best and that's okay. Did it occur to you to ask why she found the

The way this is written you don't seem to have the ability to understand these are important years to learn from our mistakes. Instead of you getting all bot hurt that she made an enthusiastic statement about her haunted house experience, you made it a slight on you. Curiosity is the key to understanding. You could have asked her what she liked about her experience, what made it better and then you could h

  • Nsr444 Saying an event is better than an other event (which you happened to pay for) is not a personal insult. It's a reflection of her experience at both events. Can't believe you take that so personally. You can like a free event better than an expensive event, and it doesn't have any meaning towards the person who paid. It's ridiculous. It doesn't sound she was ungrateful, unhappy, or r de. She probably had a great time with you too.
