  • So, I (17F) went to my friends (18F) lets call her Chole, birthday lunch, which was really fun and everything, but I was the first to leave and when I left I said 'thanks for having me' or something like that and pretty much got up and left, she gave a me a weird look but just replied with 'thanks for coming' After this one of the other girls at the lunch texted me and said that everyone else paid for their own meal and I was the only one who didn't and the birthday girl had to pay, which obviou

  • and i have been to heaps of other birthdays lunches hosted by her, all of which she or her parents paid for. So I just assumed it would be the same this time, especially since i wasn't told otherwise. But when i found out i was immediately so embarrassed and apologetic, so I texted Chloe ASAP, and said" hey girl I just found out everyone paid for your meal, if u want u can just Imk how much it was so I can transfer" but she responded really formal and said" eevryone else paid for their meals but

  • Maybe I am just reading into to it bit it seemed really out of character for her to text like that and now I don't know what to do especially cause I have school tommorow and I have to talk to her. update: I talked to her in person today and apologised for what I did and the way I worded my text to her and gave her the money for my portion of the meal and a iced coffee because I know she likes does, she accepted my apology and I think we're ok now. I think the reason I thought she would pay was

  • where my parents pretty really instilled in me if i was the birthday person and hosting, i was accepted to pay for everyones meals, and the others just brought gifts, obliviously I now know this isn't the truth and i just came off really entitled and annoying.

  • festivebum The "if you want" part makes you a huge YTA.

  • Fit_Rice_4433 I can't get past the "hey girl everyone else said they paid for your meal how much was it so I can transfer" it wasnt her meal. It was yours. They wanted you to pay for yours. I understand the arrangement thing and you not knowing but that was a poor way to address the issue bc you are not acknowledging the situation at hand at all lol. Also if it was her birthday you all should have not only covered your own meals but hers as well. what sort of Tom foolery is this

  • clxz2106 Just transfer her back for the food. What do you mean "if you want". Yta.

  • Specialist_End_750 Bring some cash and let her know that you misunderstood the arrangements and that her friendship with you means everything. Don't take no for an answer.

  • LadybuggingLB You don't ask her if she WANTS you to pay her back, the only reason to put her on the spot like that is you're hoping it will be awkward enough that she says no and pays for you. Just send her the money period.

  • Embarrassed-Ad-8056 Did you get her a birthday card? If not, get her one now with a message about how what a wonderful person she is and put money in the card - enough to cover your food and a tip and extra for her food. Then let it go. Consider this your first painful steps into celebrating as an adult - someone must always pay and most of the time it will be you.

  • HistoryPristine1029 Generally in these situations you pay for your own food and pitch in some extra for whoever's birthday it is.

  • Quid-Pro-No YTA. I don't care how many times someone has paid for your meal, never assume they are going to do it again when you go out to eat with them. Always offer to pay for yourself. That is how you lose friends and end up in someone's Reddit post where they are complaining about the friend that expects everyone to pay for them. They probably think you left first to avoid paying because that's exactly how it looks regardless of what the reason was.

  • Debt Mindless6356 YTA, always be prepared to pay for your own meal unless explicitly told it's covered. You split without even covering the tip portion of your bill. The general rule with my friends and I is if someone covers the bill, everyone else pays the tip. When you found out you should immediately have sent her your share of the cost. You don't double down and ask "if you want" obviously she wants. The fact that another person had to tell you

  • means that it was a topic of conversation amongst them. I would be so embarrassed if I were you.

  • MotherOf4Jedi 1 Sith Just go up to her and sincerely apologize and tell her you misunderstood that your meal wasn't covered. Giver her the money for your meal and some extra for part of hers, and assure her that next time you'll make sure you'll know what's expected and be better prepared. Mistakes happen. It's how we handle those mistakes that reveals whether or not someone is the a-h e. You sound truly sorry for misinterpreting what you were supposed to do, so if you make it right, you're NTA.
