  • AITA for telling my parents to stop making changes to the house im buying without asking me?

My granddad recently passed away, and his house was offered to everyone in the family at a discounted price. Everyone else said no, so I decided to buy it. I got
  • no, so I decided to buy it. I got approved for the loan and everything has been moving along well should have it legally in my name by Oct 11- Nov. The house is still under my dad and his families name atm.

  • My parents offered to help paint and carpet the house. I agreed and offered to pay for their time and materials, but they refused.

  • My mum initially messaged me saying she was going over to do some cleaning, which was completely fine. We also made a plan that I would take some days off work and we would paint the house together.

  • Fast forward, my parents went over supposedly to clean and instead painted basically the entire house without telling me.

  • When I found out, I went over to see it. Most of it was okay, but my mum had used a spray gain in the lounge and it wasn't done particularly well. There were drips, uneven patches and excess paint that I had to clean up.

  • I was frustrated because we'd specifically discussed me being there when the painting was done. It wasn't really about them helping - | appreciated that. It was the fact that decisions were being made about a house I'm buying without involving me.

  • I sent them a message basically saying: "I appreciate that you're trying to help, but I'm supposed to be buying this house and I need to have a say in what happens to it. We'd agreed that you'd let me know when you were painting so I could be there, but instead it was done without telling me.

  • Please don't do anything else to the house without talking to me first. I'm genuinely excited about buying it, but if things keep being changed without me being consulted, I'm going to have to reconsider the situation. I don't want an argument. I just want it respected that I'm the buyer and decisions about the house need to involve me."

  • This went down terribly. I've since been called selfish and ungrateful, been told I need help/therapy, and that I should just get over it and let my mum do what she wants.

  • Other family members have now gotten involved and mostly seem to think I'm in the wrong.

  • I do appreciate what my parents are trying to do for me. My problem isn't that they're helping or that I'm expecting perfection from free work.

  • I just don't understand why I'm apparently wrong for wanting to be consulted before things are done to a house I'm in the process of buying.

  • The reaction from my family has honestly made me question whether I'm being unreasonable.

  • quats555 Now you know why everyone else said no. How it starts is almost certainly what you can expect going forward. If you don't like what - they're doing to their house which sounds like it will remain "their" house even if you buy it - then the time to back out is now.

  • 3Maltese The deal hasn't closed yet. No one should be updating the house until it closes.

  • pink4pink Do not let anyone in your family have keys to your house. Your parents and extended relatives see this as their family house and think they get to have control of that house. Keep the boundaries firm and do not let them get involved with anything to do with the renovations and care of that house. NTA
