Peace and quiet are why I like to go to natural places. I hear so much noise any time I leave my apartment, and it's rare for me to just walk around somewhere that's completely silent except for the sounds of bugs. If I hiked in New York City, where I live, that would be called "walking," and although seeing all of NYC's sights on foot is a beautiful experience, it's very different from walking in the woods. I think both are worthwhile and fulfilling, but I hike in nature to escape my day-to-day life. I already see so much litter on the ground in the city, and I don't want to see it on a hiking trail! If I wanted to hear radio hits on the hiking trail, I would play them for myself in my AirPods!
I share Dan's sentiment about people playing music loudly on the beach. I just want to hear the waves! If I wanted to listen to music, I would play it in my ears. I know I can't expect everyone to be library-quiet at the beach, but I wish people would be more considerate and try not to disturb others' experience in nature.

Why do so many people say that they like hiking on dating apps? I have a couple of theories. It is an attractive athletic hobby when compared with others, like playing adult recreational sports or going to the gym every day. I don't think I'd want to date someone who goes to the gym for 3 hours a day without me, because I don't know when we'd get to spend any time together! While you can go to the gym with your partner, it isn't a good time to connect with each other. When you go hiking, you can spend a lot of that time talking with your partner, which is attractive!
The other big difference between hiking and other athletic hobbies is that you can claim to like hiking, but only do it every three months. It's much easier to be a phony hiking fan than it is to be a phony gym bro. Many hobbies like this show up on dating apps, including, but not limited to, reading. When somebody says they like to read, that could mean they read a book every week, or they've read one book this year, and they're trying to seem attractive to potential mates.
