Editor's composite of each profession discussed. / Source: Unsplash At a certain point in your playthrough of "life simulator," at around level 18, you're going to have to choose a class. Make sure you choose wisely…
Although you can respec later on, it's time-consuming and expensive to do so. You may not have any idea what you're even doing in the game yet when you're only level 18, but just know that if you choose wrong, you're going to have a rough playthrough. You're going to have a bad balance between the fun parts of the game and the grinding, and you might get burned out and not get the recognition that you expect to get within your chosen class.
If you choose poorly, you'll end up watching the clock every day while you're at work, just counting down the seconds until you can clock out and go home.
Take a look through these responses of the top 15 voted most over-romanticized careers as submitted by responders to this online discussion.

Actor/Actress (...or any kind of famous person)

Giving away your annonymity and being recognized everywhere you go isn't all its cracked up to be. Not that I would know. But this seems to be a common enough sentiment among lower-level celebrity types. There is a point, of course, where you have enough money that it's worth it. But if you're “rich and famous” but not wealthy enough to afford the expenses that go along with security teams, private transportation, and secluded private homes and luxury travel lodgings, then I'd have to imagine this is pretty miserable.
Better to be wealthy without all the attention…
Actor/actresses or any kind of famous person. When you are well known, you can’t have much privacy anymore and every single one of your moves, decisions will get judged

Nurse
via Patty Brito -
This was a popular response, though I'm not sure who is romanticizing this profession. Especially these days. It's well known now that this is a hard and dirty job.
Nursing.
Another reader added:
Yes! Bed pans, changing beds, washing and feeding patients whilst attending to endless paperwork wasn't my idea of what being a nurse would be like. I wanted to help to heal people not just care for them.

Doctor

On a similar note. Long hours and giving up all your best years just to spend the next 20 chasing student loan debt. Your kids will be grateful for the family wealth, though, if you ever see them.
Doctor
Doctor sounds amazing until you find out the real prize is a decade of debt and a pager.

Musician

This one is basically a lottery ticket, unless your parents are wealthy and well-connected…
Musician.
You’re a product someone else sells and you don’t get as much say as you’d think. The travel isn’t glamorous. All you see in a city is the inside of your tour bus and often aren’t even sure where you are unless you read it on the call sheet or someone tells you.

Laywer
via Hunters Race -
Lots of school and student debt lead to another career of long, boring hours. No thanks.
Lawyers. Omg there's so many law school students, so many don't do anything like what they wanted to do and carry mountains of debt.
Another responder had a similar answer:
Law. You literally do homework for a living. If you are in litigation you are stressed out as h**l. There is a reason why it has a high rate of d**ression.
Another response had this to say about the profession:
While people criticize lawyers, they’re also impressed. You don’t have to be brilliant to be a lawyer. You just have to persevere through first year. You just have to pass. And most lawyers do things like residential real estate closings or small trusts and LLCs. And, if they can afford one, their paralegal or secretary does almost all the work. The lawyer shows up late, leaves early, and takes a long lunch. They need someone to tell them what day it is. And, then, everything is a rush because court tomorrow or closing tomorrow. Most rarely, if ever, see inside a courtroom. And they dress like schlubs.

Private investigator
via Andres Siimon -
When you expect “Sherlock Holmes” or “Magnum, P.I.” and end up sitting in a car for 12 hours as what basically boils down to being a paid stalker.
Private investigator. Most people are not prepared for the reality of it. 😂

Finance

When you expect “The Wolf of Wall Street” and end up living in a spreadsheet simulator. This reality does not stop a lot of young finance bros from living out that fantasy, though.
Finance.
One user responded this.
Another elaborated:Finance looks like champagne and skyline views, but it's mostly excel and a lot of coffee.
The first responded here:
Yep and a cubicle wall that’s not high enough

Librarian
-
Everyone who loves books at one point has dreamt of becoming a librarian. Wearing stylish thick-rimmed glasses and cozy sweaters while you shush people for talking and read books all day.
Librarian and other library employees. They are not silently reading all day. They are teachers, babysitters, social workers, therapists, tech support, help desk, tax/unemployment/healthcare specialists, and so much more. And paid poorly for it.

Chef

Way less Gordon Ramsay and glamour than you expected. Still with all the yelling, though… that part is pretty accurate.
Being a chef.

Another replied:
Yes - it’s a tough job. On your feet all night slaving over a stove and trying to time everything just right.

Pilot

Lots of waiting in airports, and lots of awkward silences while sitting in a cockpit with coworkers you've never met for hours at a time.
Airline pilots. It's a grind. A bus driver in the sky.

Flight Attendant

Ok, so maybe this hasn't been so romanticized in recent years as it was in the mid-20th century, but still, a lot of people expect they're going to see the world and, instead, end up seeing a lot of airport hotels that aren't anywhere close to desirable destinations.
Flight attendants. Being a glorified waiter in the most uncomfortable restaurant on planet earth…

Video Game Tester

Every kid who grew up playing video games probably dreamt of this one at one point. But the pay isn't great, and the work is far from the exhilaration you expected. I'd argue that working anywhere in video game development fits here, too.
Video game tester
Video games tester sounds like a dream until you walk into the same wall for 8 hours

Car Salesman
via Getty Images -
I don't know who is romanticizing this one, when the phrase “used car salesman” is literally a thing. But, this does seem to be one that was hyped up in recent years by those "Manosphere" and “sigma grindset” hustle culture types.
Selling cars shouldn't be a job.
Selling cars means smiling while customers google your price right in front of you.
I may or may not have done this in the past myself…

Teacher
-
Lots of us, from those who like kids to those with intellectual fantasies, wanted to “reach” the younger generation, dreaming of throwing on a pair of glasses and taking to the classroom. But the reality is far from idyllic, as any teacher will readily tell you over a strong drink on the weekend.
Teacher. Social media thinks is all room decor, cute outfits, and leaving by 4 pm.
When it's actually grading homework during evenings and on the weekend and getting underpaid.
