The excuse may sound crazy, but that doesn't mean that it isn't true!
Excuses: what your manager says every time you explain yourself. Unfortunately, people are so used to lying and hearing lies that now, when you try to explain yourself, what happened, or your behavior, everyone thinks it's just another excuse. I get it; sometimes some of them are pretty hard to believe. As a teacher, you won't believe that the student's homework was eaten by their dog. As a boss, you will not believe that the email talking badly about you wasn't written by the person who sent it. As a cashier, you won't believe that the client forgot their wallet, but they will come right back with the money to pay. That's how life works. Some excuses have been used way too much; now no one will believe they are true. But sometimes, and just sometimes, they are true. The person who you are looking at thinking, "How can they think I will believe that" it's actually telling you the truth. But hey, it's hard to prove it.
This happened to me one time, and it was so hard to make my friend understand that it wasn't just a fake excuse. A couple of years back, I was on a bus going from the train station to a special class that was not at school; it was at a museum. I got on the bus at the perfect time to arrive early, which is not normal for me. But it was an important day; I needed to be on time. The bus was around midway when, all of a sudden, it broke down. A bummer, but that is not uncommon. I still had time to wait for the next bus and still arrive on time. I texted a friend telling her that, just in case I'm not there at 5, my bus broke down, but I won't be more than 5 minutes late. I waited until another bus comes in, I go up, take my seat, and off to go again. Not even 20 blocks away, the bus broke down. I'm not kidding! I realized I must be having a bad luck day or something.
When I finally made it to the museum, I was 30 minutes late. My friend couldn't believe that I was on two buses and that both broke down. She said I was inventing that because I'm always late. And that is true; I'm always late, but that time I wasn't. Luckily, my professor believed me, so after class he asked me to stay a bit longer so he could tell me what had happened when I was on the bus.
My story was just a fake excuse to my friend, and it was almost impossible for her to believe me. But well, I understand her. I'm always late, and two buses breaking down in the middle of the street isn't a normal thing that happens every day. At least I didn't miss the full class, and my professor was understanding about the whole crazy day I had.
