Remote work dashboard flags any gap of 10 mins or more as 'slacking': 'A bathroom break counts, and so does reading a policy update'

  • A remote worker talks into their phone at their desk at home
  • Our idle-time flag counts a bathroom break as slacking.

The dashboards I see flag any gap of ten minutes or more between chats as idle time and send it to a manager. A bathroom break counts, and so does reading a policy update. People learn to stay logged in and click around so they look busy, and when the queue is short staffed the gaps show up anyway, so the flag mostly measures staffing. Has anyone worked somewhere that handled idle time better?
  • Commenters gave their opinions and ideas about this.

Frequent_Capital_523 The dashboard is just measuring staffing but calling it productivity, classic. At my last place they only looked at idle time if it was over an hour and even then it was just a nudge not

  • a writeup. Sick days and bathroom breaks were not tracked like that. The whole click around to look busy thing is so sad because everyone knows it is fake but management pretends the numbers mean something.

  • the_half_spoon OP Makes me think the status light only measures where you're sitting. In the office the paperwork doesn't show up anywhere on the dashboard, and at home people are careful to wiggle the mouse so they stay green. A manager looking at that would count the office crew as slacking when they're just doing the job away from the keyboard

  • the_half_spoon OP An hour as the cutoff is a lot more sane, ten minutes basically catches anyone who got up for water. Did they at least have something for when the queue was de d, or was it just the nudge

  • babygyrl09 I go idle a lot more when I am in office than when I am wfh. This is cause I worry about my status going idle and being seen as slacking when im home, but when im in the office, im dealing with physical paperwork and other stuff that doenst necessarily keep me tied to the computer
