Restaurant owner bans his friend's wife after complaining about the food after eating most of it just to get it comped multiple times: 'He said banning someone's wife over a $24 pasta dish is ridiculous, especially when he brought 15 paying customers'

A server working at a restaurant filled with customers. Actor performance of story events.
I own a small Italian restaurant and a friend of mine asked if he could celebrate his 40th birthday there with about 15 people. I agreed to reserve the back section for them. His wife has this habit of ordering something, eating half of it, then complaining so she doesn't have to pay. I've seen her do it at other restaurants but figured she wouldn't pull that at mine.
Well she did. She ordered a seafood pasta, ate most of it, then told my server it tasted spoiled and demanded it be removed from the bill. My chef checked the remaining food and couldn't find anything wrong, but I took it off anyway because I didn't want an argument during my friend's birthday. The next morning my friend

thanked me and mentioned wanting to do another dinner there for his parents' anniversary. I told him he's welcome anytime but his wife isn't. He got offended and said I was accusing his wife of lying. I told him I've watched her do this multiple times and I'm not putting my staff through it again. He said banning someone's wife

over a $24 pasta dish is ridiculous, especially when he brought 15 paying customers. Now a few mutual friends think I overreacted and should've just told him what happened instead of immediately banning her.

A well-presented pasta dish from an italian restaurant.
ABCBDMomma "... banning someone's wife over a $24 pasta dish is ridiculous" Your friend is fully aware of what his wife is doing and approves it. Also, he didn't bring 15 paying customers. He brought 14 and a thief.

Aggravating-Kick-967 I'm 74 and have been comped twice at a restaurant. Neither time did I ask for it. Once I was comped by a friends daughter at her cafe as a thank you for things I had given here after an apartment fire. The second time because I got a dish and didn't care for it. I told the waiter there was nothing wrong with it, I just didn't care for their flavor profile. The comp really surprised me because it was all me, not them.

dmonay95 NTA, classic f Iaround and find out. She's obnoxious and tactless to eat majority of it and demand a refund. If more places held people accountable for their balls it, we'd have far less entitled people thinking they can scam small businesses.

Key-Button7387 Tell your friend that he's right that it is ridiculous & that you're banning them both so he can continue to support his wife's ridiculous behaviour somewhere else

username 0000 But causing a scene and issues at your restaurant over a 24$ pasta dish is ok? They probably need to eat at your restaurant because she's banned everywhere else. lol NTA

Lisa Marie622 NTJ - your friend is though. He should have told his wife to knock it off.

Dainty Why is it always the person who was wronged that is expected to be the better or bigger person.

Lassagna12 Crazy how he changes the point of the problem from lying to cost of a dish. If he truly believed his wife about spoiled pasta, he would have stuck to his guns. He would back his wife up about bad ingredients. Instead, he changed the focus to the cost of the dish. Thats admitting that his wife lied about the pasta and you should foot the cost. If he truly believed the seafood pasta has gone

bad, he would have berated you about the freshness of the ingredients, not 24 bucks.

Aggravating_Button99 Make a deal with your friend. She can come, but if she pulls this again, he has to pay DOUBLE the bill. Wonder if he backs her up when $$$ is on the line.
