But actually… How do these giant metal contraptions that weigh tons of pounds lightly float above the waves??
TikTok is full of dumb videos, but this recent one has viewers wondering maybe they are the idiots. People are seeing this video of a ship and thinking, “wait, am I dumb??” because they're starting to realize they don't actually know how boats float. Do you? Sure, they're filled with air, which is less dense than water, but still… How can you look at a massive navy ship and think, “yes, this makes total sense.”
TikToker Jack Lawerence posted a video of him at the famous USS Intrepid docked in NYC. He's looking at it completely puzzled. Like, we all know about buoyancy, but do we actually know about it? Looking at that massive ship just sitting there on top of the water is actually so confusing. It's not only triggering people on how buoyancy works, but also triggering phobias many had never even heard of before like megalophobia, which is the fear of large objects and submechanophobia, which is the fear of man-made objects that are submerged under water.
One person commented “don't even get me started on planes” and that also has caused a whole new whirlwind of despair. Like, we get it, aerodynamics, but like… DO WE GET IT?? How the heck do you get this giant heavy metal contraption to lift off the ground, defy gravity, and then soar in the sky for HOURS? Are Buoyancy and aerodynamics things regular humans are supposed to get and understand or is it totally normal that all of TikTok is mind f***k right now?? After seeing these, how can you not start to think about helicopters… How do they work? Now I'm questioning cars, how do they not rip apart when you're going hundreds of miles fast around a racetrack? How has one 8 second video got the Internet tripppin' and double guessing all sorts of things we thought we once understood?? Who even am I???
