Text - doctorvictory 2h A few of my more WTF moments in pediatrics: A young boy who liked to stick rubber strings up his urethra. No idea why, didn't seem to be related to any kind of abuse (he swore no one taught him to do this or made him do it). He'd put them in for a few minutes, then take them out. One day one got lost up there and he didn't tell anyone for a week until he started peeing blood A teenage boy who got in a bike accident and got flung over the handlebars. Scrotum snagged on the

Text - Teenage boy who wore cargo shorts to bed and had a zipper accident when he got up to pee overnight. Had to glue a large laceration down the center of his penis. Felt bad that he had to be attended to by 2 female doctors and a female nurse (plus his mom) but that's all who was there in the ER at 3AM Toddler who somehow ended up with carpet nails embedded in her skull. Had to get DCF involved with that one because no one had a good answer as to how that happened. A young girl who managed to

Text - NewlyMintedSurgeon Hand surgeon here. Had to operate on a guy who's hand went through an industrial roller. Every single bone in his hand down to the distal radius and ulna was completely shattered. Ended with multiple phalangial amputation and a moderately deformed hand.

Text - SoylentGreenbean 2h Had a patient in a rural location who had severe diabetes and resulting neuropathy (numbness) in his feet. He took horrible care of himself and had low health literacy. Anyways, he had noticed his big toe "stinking" for several days. His dog had started licking it the day before, but didn't come in to see me until the dog LICKED HIS TOE OFF. Got X-rays just for the formality of it (although he clearly had no toe) and yup, dog licked it clean off. Turns out he had osteo

Text - o00-000-000yea 4h My dad is an ER doctor, and people coming in with stuff stuck up their ass in pretty common. Usually its something like a pen or a potato, but onetime someone had a lightbulb. They always have a story like "I was taking a shower, and sat on a potato"

Text - CybReader 2h My mother had a patient stick an entire can of hairspray up his ass in a sex act. Couldn't get it out, they had to do actual surgery. The worst part, the sex act wasn't with his wife, but with someone else and she found out after surgery when he had to explain to her why he had emergency surgery. I don't know who I felt more sorry for, the guy or his wife.

Text - blurrryvision 1h Optometrist here. Had a patient who over-wore her soft contact lenses for over 7 months straight without removing them. The contact lenses deprived the cornea of oxygen and tiny blood vessels started to grow from her eye into the contact lens. By the time I saw her, the contact lenses had been fused onto the front surface of her eyes. Her eyes were blood shot and she was in a great deal of pain. The contact lenses could not be removed. Our corneal specialist had to bring

Text - videoismylife 1h Saw a patient in the clinic for the first time, with a chronic wound on her shin; she told me it kept leaking blood and she couldn't keep anything dry - her pants, her bed, her furniture; that was the thing that prompted her to come in for a look-see. I took the "dressing" (a dirty rag) off and was confronted with a 3X6" shallow wound, bright bloody red, that was MOVING.... it was filled with live maggots and blood, thousands of them. The interesting thing,is, they were p

Text - ArchdukeLidl 1h Obligatory "not me but someone l know". When my sister was training to be a nurse in pediatrics (late 1990s I believe) she was training at one of the biggest children's hospitals in the Ccountry. Girl aged around 14-15 came in with severe lower abdominal pain, refused to give the doctors any information until her mother was out of the room. My sister and the doctors were then informed by this girl that her boyfriend had fucked her with hairbrush and the object had become l

Text - forumjoker88 lh Think I've posted this on a similar thread before, but here goes anyway. I'm not a doctor, my dad is an ER doctor and my mom is an ER nurse. Like someone else mentioned, stuff on people's asses is way more common than you think. Anyway, one night my dad is working and some older (prolly mid 50s gentleman) comes WADDLING into the ER on his own. Fills out the forms, sits down (sort of) etc. Didn't seem to be in pain so my dad and the other people working weren't in a hurry t

Text - Lakesrr 1h Not me but a doctor I know told me of a man with cancer in his face from tobacco whose entire lower jaw had rotted off and the only thing keeping his face "clean" of rotting flesh were the maggots eating his face and he'd have to lean his head all the way back and pour water over his face to drink, inevitably swallowing a few critters in the process. That ones hard to forget

Text - LoogyHead 1h My dad saw an interesting case in the ED some years back. Hey got a call from an ambulance saying they had a 14 year old suicide attempt en route. Story was she was depressed, grabbed her dad's .22 and shot her temple. Sizable entry wound, but no exit wound and she was still alive, but unconscious. When they arrived they did imaging and found the bullet on the other side of the skull, but the bone was not pierced at all. It took the radiologist a bit to trace the path, but wh

Text - needs_more_zoidberg 1h Physician Anesthesiologist here: A nice young lady was sitting in her car when someone came up and put 3 bullets into her through the driver's side window. One missed her and one hit her in the right lung, causing her lung to collapse. Nothing crazy yet. The third one entered under her left armpit and there was no exit wound. Turns out the bullet settled into the tiny space between the heart and some the biggest blood vessels in the heart. A centimeter in any direct

Text - body_talk 55m Years ago while working in the O.R., assisting on a laparoscopy when the surgeon decided to have the nurse clean the woman's belly button. Turned out her belly button was much deeper than normal and appeared to have NEVER been cleaned. It took the nurses at least 15 minutes to finally extract a "concretion": Many years worth of dirt, dead skin, etc that had been there so long it had hardened like a rock about the size of a pecan. I've seen lots of horrific things but this on

Text - duffs007 1h There was a full term baby that died in utero. It had polycystic kidney disease and accordingly had massive, oversized kidneys. They tried to deliver it vaginally but the kidneys were so big it couldn't pass through. The OB must have been really pulling to get the baby out because its head came off. We did the autopsy and our diener did the most amazing job of sewing it back on and arranging the blanket just so for the photos. Another time this doc was doing a 2nd trimester ab

Text - Loqol 50m My wife is a medical assistant at a cancer center. She specifically works for the breast cancer department. She told me one day after coming home and popping a bottle of wine that she saw a patient that had neglected care so much that her breast had gone necrotic. As my wife was helping with a dressing, she watched in horror as an entire tumor slipped out of the poor ladie's breast. Just...popped right out.

Text - lilmoonrock 1h A good friend of my family is a doctor. His favorite story is the one of this guy who came in with the branch of some coniferous tree in his urethra , that he couldn't get out anymore. They had to cut his dick open, as there was no other way to remove that thing. The man said he was at home, decorating the house for Christmas, slipped, and fell on the table decoration Sure.
