In case you missed it, Wonder Woman was appointed as a 'Honorary Ambassador to the U.N.' back in October. Leaders were hoping to inspire young women and girls to be independent, powerful, and strong, in the spirit of the heroine, going into 2017.
The announcement was faced with the usual insane controversy. 45,000 people signed a petition which was presented to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urging the U.N. to strip of the heroine of her status.
"Although the original creators may have intended Wonder Woman to represent a strong and independent 'warrior' woman with a feminist message, the reality is that the character's current iteration is that of a large breasted, white woman of impossible proportions, scantily clad in a shimmery, thigh-baring body suit."
First off 'current iteration'? As in Wonder Woman has never appeared this way before? Uhh, come again?
Shown above: 'Current iteration' which is totally different than this....
Thanks guys, these insane reactions to the most mundane things are why we can't have nice things anymore.
So, what was meant to be an honorary symbol of empowerment for young women, as Wonder Woman has been for decades, is instead yet another opportunity for the special snowflakes of the world to be offended, essentially because she's 'too hot'.
Gal Gadot, the Israeli actress who is portraying WW in the upcoming DC Film, had this to say in an interview with TIME, "There are so many horrible things that are going on in the world, and this is what you're protesting, seriously?"
"When people argue that Wonder Woman should 'cover up,' I don't quite get it," she continued. "They say, 'If she's smart and strong, she can't also be sexy.' That's not fair. Why can't she be all of the above?"
We're going with Gal on this one.
If the major concern here, and the point of this petition, is shedding light on persecution and the stacked deck minorities face, is it really insane that we allow ourselves to look up to an Israeli woman? Because god knows women and the jewish people have NEVER been persecuted or treated unfairly.
Besides, doesn't the UN have more pressing concerns than responding to internet outrage right now?
The final update in all of this is that Chloe Behrens at change.org has created this 'counter petition' to get Princess Diana reinstated. It reads:
"It has come to my attention that Wonder Woman has been removed from her role as ambassador for empowerment for the UN. A petition was signed by only 45,000 people wanting to dismiss her role. Their reasons are because 'she is a large breasted, white woman of impossible proportions, scantily clad in a shimmery, thigh-baring body suit.' Wonder Woman is so much more than appearances and this petition will hopefully prove the point. Wonder Woman is the embodiment of feminism, peace, justice, and truth. Anyone who knows the character knows that what she does advocates for the peace, freedom and rights of all people around the world, much like what the UN strives to do,"
