The Mercedes Simplex Concept Car Is Retro Gone Wild

  Cars have come a long way since they were first invented. Although people had been creating different prototypes of the car since the 1600s, it is generally agreed that the first working car was created in 1884 by German engineer Gottlieb Daimler. Between 1900 and 1915, cars began to be become popular with the American population (up until then, trains, trams and horse and cart were the main form of transport). It was during this time that the Mercedes Simplex was released. 

  The Mercedes Simplex was unlike any other car. With a powerful engine and luxurious design details, the car quickly became a favorite of aristocrats and royalty. It's immense body and luxuries set the standards for the top cars over the next 70 years.

  In a nod of recognition to this renowned car, Mercedes Benz recently released the 2019 version of the Mercedes Simplex, and it is a unique combination of retro and futurism. The car, which is entirely electric, looks like something out of Blade Runner. And we want one.

  With no roof, windscreen or doors, the car, although functional, is a concept car. Notably, the front grille is replaced with a 3D display, bordered by a rose gold frame, that shows the vintage Mercedes Benz logo and the car's status at a glance. Inside the car, the only information the driver gets is the most crucial - speed and navigation. In an age burdened with an overload of technology (especially when it comes to cars), this car preaches simplicity.

  Mercedes Benz has no plans to make this car available to the public. Eschewing the basic standards a car should meet before hitting the roads, this car is all about the concept. 

  And what concept is that, exactly? We think this car is a tribute to the complex relationship between the past and the future - proof that they don't have to be at odds with one another, but can co-exist symbiotically. This is the next logical step in our obsession of vintage and retro, and we think the future has never looked better.
