On the 11th of the 11th month, Mercury passed across the Sun in what's called a transit. This only happens about 13 times each century, with the next Mercury transit taking place in 2032.
The entire transit took 5.5 hours, and although Mercury circles around the Sun like all the planets in our solar system, it orbits in an elliptical shape and usually passes above or below the sun, remaining unseen by us Earthlings. Mercury and Venus are the only planets that pass between Earth and the Sun - the rest of the planets are on the other side of Earth, reaching out to the more distant areas of the galaxy.
If you didn't get to see this Mercury transit, don't worry - although you'll have to wait thirteen years to see the next one with your own eyes, we collected fifteen amazing photos of the 2019 Mercury transit for you to enjoy.
