Sri Lanka is a small and often excluded country from the 'beach paradise' countries in southeast Asia. But Sri Lanka is as close as it gets to 'beach paradise'. The tiny island is directly underneath India, and beaches line the west, south and east coasts of the country (the north is more conservative, so people don't swim at the beaches there). But if you're looking for the perfect beach experience in Sri Lanka, Arugam Bay Beach should be your number one stop.

Arugam Bay is on the east side of Sri Lanka, and it's considered the best place for surfing in the country. The town itself is tiny, which adds to the appeal of the small, easygoing beach town Sri Lanka has become famous for. It's the kind of place where you can spend the whole day in a hammock and not feel guilty about it.

Arugam Bay is reached like any other town in Sri Lanka - by train or bus (with many tuk tuks in between). The town is only home to a few hundred locals, and however many backpackers are staying, but everything is within walking distance, including the beach. If you're feeling really lazy, you can grab a tuk tuk down to the beach. Arugam Bay Beach is lined with restaurants, cafes and surf schools, and most places have some chairs on the beach. You can order a coconut and get it delivered to you without moving from your lounge chair on the beach. Heaven.

The best time to visit Arugam Bay is between May and September, when the weather and the ocean are both warm. Arugam Bay has everything a beach-going traveler could want - all you need to do is get yourself there.
