Canadian Officials Warn People To Not Let Moose Lick Their Cars

Though the sign itself may seem funny, and it is, there's a serious reason behind why officials in Canada put it up. Salt it a snack that moose absolutely love, and apparently, they have realized that they can get it off our cars.

"They're obsessed with salt, it's one of the things they need for the minerals in their body," a spokesman from Jasper National Park in Canada, Steve Young, told CNN. "They usually get it from salt lakes in the park, but now they realized they can also get road salt that splashes onto cars."

CNN reports that at the Jasper National Park, people often park their cars on the side of the road, hoping to get a look at the moose, but that actually letting the moose near the cars is very dangerous. If you allow moose to lick salt of your car, you run the risk of them becoming habituated with being around cars, and that's risky not only for the moose but for the drivers too.

"Moose and cars are not a good mix. If you hit the moose with your car, you take the legs out from under it and it's going through your windshield," Young explained, adding that it is simply best to drive away when you see a moose approaching you. He also stressed that it's important to stay in your car and not interact with the wildlife, especially the moose, who will charge you if they feel threatened.

"We've been seeing a lot more moose lately. The wolf population is decreasing, which means there's fewer predators and the moose population is going up as a result," Young said. "This also means people need to be respectful and give them space."
