Burger King dug itself a hole on International Women's Day. The fast-food chain thought it was the best day to post a (now deleted) tweet saying that "Women belong in the kitchen." A follow-up post explained that only 20% of women are chefs, and Burger King will be starting a scholarship program designed to "help female Burger King employees pursue their culinary dreams". However, the use of a misogynist joke on a day celebrating women left many Twitter users highly unimpressed, as gender stereotypes are still rampant in 2021 and far from being able to be joked about. Check out the best Twitter responses to Burger King's tweet below for what not to do on International Women's Day.
This was Burger King's first tweet. It was intended to be read as the first part of a two-part tweet. However, a lot of people only saw this tweet.
Burger King's "second" part of the tweet was mentioned in the replies to the first tweet, which people often don't read.
KFC was quick to respond to the tweet.
Burger King's tweet was quickly deleted but not fast enough. The internet had already seen it.
Some people wondered if a similar sexist joke would be made about men too.
Or if it would extend to racism too.
Many women were highly unimpressed by the tone deaf tweet.
And some struggled to believe that the tweet was real.
One theory is that this was a marketing scheme to get attention.
But most people couldn't believe that Burger King's PR representatives allowed the tweet to be posted.
Some users pointed out that the same point could be made without including a harmful joke about gender roles.
Many people remarked that the second part of the tweet would be seen much less than the first tweet.
We agree that sexist jokes are never a good idea.
It definitely seems outdated, yet the fact that it's still being used says volumes.
Burger King definitely shouldn't leave its day job for comedy.
Could have been better timed. Or not said at all.
