Humans have advanced quite a bit over the last several thousands of years. Hey, we can go to space! Surely that means we're an advanced society. Well, we are, but maybe not as advanced as we think. This Twitter thread from Mary Robinette Kowal gets into the nitty-gritty of exactly how astronauts go about using the bathroom while in orbit and how the argument that there is no good way for women to pee in space was never a quality answer for the lack of women involved in space exploration, at least from the engineering side of things. Sure, the Apollo missions were special, but the journey of ideas for just how astronauts could use the bathroom in space appears to have been very lackluster for a very long time.
To rely on an old saying: why is it that we could put a man on the moon but we couldn't come up with a half-decent way to get people a bathroom in space without having to sit with it?
