Unless you've been living under a rock for the past couple of years, you may have realized that there's been a big debate about whether we need to raise the minimum wage. More people have been arguing that the rate does not reflect the cost of living, and retail and food outlets have been struggling to entice in new employees with their usual salaries.
However, not everyone has been convinced by the suggestion that most of us need more money. This has recently been brought to the attention of TikTok, after a viral video of a Costco employee revealed that she received $29.50 an hour "just to draw smiley faces on receipts".
After seeing the backlash this received, @lilyleia stepped in to defend the revelation. They claimed that the wage was perfectly reasonable, and that those criticizing it should be concerned with why their own employers aren't paying them more if they worked jobs with a greater difficulty level.
While many viewers agreed with the point they had made, there were still some skeptics who pointed to the burden of student loans and added pressure at work for those who worked in fields such as healthcare. It may seem like we will never come to an agreement on what everybody should be paid, but we can probably all agree that working at Costco seems like a pretty sweet deal.
