You know that moment - when you go to the vet because something happens, and you're so worried, and you're so glad that your cat is fine, and then you see the bill… Yeah. Owning cats costs money. It's the same with every pet, you need to know that before you adopt one. If you can't afford it, then it might not be the right time to take one in. You have to be responsible not just for the cost of the adoption, or the cost of the food that your cat likes the most, it's also those unexpected expenses that will come at some point.
We understand the unpleasantness of getting a particularly high bill. Cats are relatively low maintenance, they don't ask for that much. Cats will take a cheap toy over an expensive one any day, and cats will choose a box over any expensive cat tree that you invest in. We get it. But that doesn't mean that you get to neglect them when they need you, even when their needs are more expensive than you're used to.
Honestly, when we first saw the title of this, we did not think that what this woman was talking about was this. We thought somebody might be pressuring her to buy some expensive cat tree that she can't afford or something, not this. We wouldn't call taking care of your cat while on vacation an "unnecessary" expense.
And we certainly don't think that letting your cat be outside for the whole week without supervision is acceptable. Maybe if the cat was at home and you got someone to come visit the cat once a day, that would be acceptable, but leaving the cat outside where it's dangerous? A-hole indeed.
