The relationship between the USA and its queer population has always been …complicated. First, it was straight-up illegal, then it was something that only got discussed behind closed doors (if you were lucky). While there are still way too many prejudiced people around, those of us that came of age in the 21st century have been fortunate to see gay rights advance to a better place than they've ever been.
However, this is America, and along with the acceptance comes the companies who have sniffed out yet another way to make a profit. So many corporations now commit to a rainbow logo during the month of June that there are almost as many memes about it as there are businesses in the Fortune 500. Not only that, but in the age of the influencer, our social media feeds seem to be inundated with LGBT internet personalities cashing in on the Pink Dollar.
It is pretty horrifying how those from marginalized sexualities and genders are asked to monetize their traumas for the sake of big business, so it's nice to see the community fight back in even this smallest and dumbest of ways. As anyone who has had the misfortune of taking a peek at Twitter's yearly Pride discourse will tell you, this catty meme makes for a refreshing change.
