I remember booking my first Airbnb. Some friends and I were heading to beautiful Tucson, Arizona for a wedding, and didn't have the guap to stay at the fancy resort with the wedding party. We found a modest house (decorated with a ton of Kokopellis) for a fraction of the price. And it came with a pool. Booking this home saved us hundreds of dollars, and for years after that wedding, we continued to use the service to make our money go a little farther while on vacation. Unfortunately for our wallets, the bargain benefit of Airbnb no longer exists.
It seems that over the past few years, the cost of renting an Airbnb has become astronomical, mostly due to fees. And people have started to notice.
One fed-up former Airbnb took to Twitter about the matter, saying that he is done with Airbnb because of all the damn rules. After my friends and I had to clean an entire 4 bedroom beach house last summer (and still paid a $300 cleaning fee), I'm very much on @calebsaysthings' side. And judging by the angry and frustrated replies, it seems like a lot of other people are, too.
The stories shared in the replies are pretty damning. Some users, just like Caleb, lamented the rules, sharing accounts of the great lengths they've gone to avoid getting charged by an owner. Others shared mind-boggling stories about owners themselves or simply roasted the site's exorbitant prices.
Can you imagine thinking that a delivery person counts as a guest? I could never.
One user pointed out that Airbnb has had a huge hand in the current housing crisis.
This user makes a simple but good point: Hotels are fun.
There's definitely something to be said about doing whatever the hell you want (within reason) and knowing exactly what you'll be paying for it. And the only cleaning fee you'll need can be placed (in cash) on the dresser.
We're Team Hotel all the way.
