Giving birth is a difficult job. And not just for humans either. We think there's a tendency to take for granted how difficult the process can be for cats too. They just seem so strong - independent. It's amazing to watch! But sometimes, even the strong and independent need help from us humans when it comes to labor time, especially if the momma is unwell. We've covered the most insane stories about pregnant cats in the past. One of them was about a cat in the middle of active labor being found abandoned outside with a note. Another such story was about a group of good Samaritans finding a neglected pregnant cat and giving her a safe place to give birth. We've even seen a pregnant cat waiting at a door with her two kittens, asking the humans inside for help - because even the cats themselves can recognize when they need help from us humans.
The story we're covering today is… not the easiest one to read. But it does have a happy ending. After a really difficult labor, this momma cat managed to pull through, and now, she has two new babies to be proud of.
"I've had 6 foster kittens in the kitten room and 1 pregnant foster cat in the attached bathroom for the last two weeks. Mama cat Mamie surprised me by starting to go into labor Thursday night."
"It seemed too early, but she was acting really uncomfortable and I thought I could see contractions."
"We watched some Kimmy Schmidt together while we waited for babies."
"In the morning, I met baby Sunni! He was perfectly clean- good job mama!"
"The next baby got stuck in the birth canal. I think he had already passed in the womb and that's why she couldn't get him out. I called the emergency vet and took her to the hospital. A stuck baby is an emergency for the mama cat and other babies in her belly."
"They removed the baby, and did an x-ray and found 3 more living babies in the womb. They gave her medicine to help her continue her labor. She was refusing to give birth in the hospital. They thought maybe she was just stressed out and wanted me to let her try to give birth at home."
"It was a long day already, and I didn't want to leave them unmonitored. Also baby Sunni was having trouble latching. My best friend came over with wine and cupcakes and offered to help. I left her with Mamie and baby while I took a shower and chilled out for a bit. I came in to find my friend "stuck." :D Sunni had finally latched and she didn't want to move."
"By morning, Mamie still hadn't given birth. She said, "I don't want more baby. I have this one. It squeaks and wants to eat me."
I told her that she loved her baby and she'd be happier when other babies are out. We made our way back to hospital."
"It was another long, hard day. Mamie still didn't give birth at the hospital, so they did a kitty C-section. All three babies had heartbeats, so we were hopeful.
The hospital called to say that one of three belly babies didn't make it out before passing. The second belly baby made it out, but passed soon after. Sunni was still doing well and the one baby who survived the C-section was put with him. They asked me to come late in the evening so they could keep monitoring.
I was prepared for there to be no babies and would be happy as long as Mamie was okay. I was ecstatic to pick up mamie with her two super squeaky strong babies!"
"Meet Aster and Sunni! When we got home, I put the babies on the heating pad to give mom a break for a minute. She doesn't mind me handling them, but she was quick to come back over to them.
Thrive, babies, thrive!"
"On the way home, Mamie was looking at me like: "Where dis baby come from? I go to sleep with one baby, I wake up and two baby. WTF?"
She loves both baby. I'm so happy that Mamie is doing so well and there's high hopes for her two sweet babies. She was an outdoor cat, so we're thinking the babies had such difficulty bc of her poor nutrition.
The Imgur community is amazing and has asked how they can help my fosters. We are always looking for supplies. :)

"Look at these strong little dudes. Sunni (gray) and Aster (white.)"
""You were right. I love baby." -Mamie probably"
"They told me to make sure Aster was latching. He doesn't seem to be having any trouble!"
"Foster cat Mamie came to me pregnant after being an outdoor cat. She had a difficult labor but it resulted in these two precious babies!"
