Some say that all Hollywood is these days is unoriginal sequels and remakes, and they aren't entirely wrong. However, not all franchises are created equally, and there are some crappy remakes that I will always be willing to see. My favorite franchises that have been repeatedly rehashed are Batman and Willy Wonka. I'm still conflicted over whether the OG Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971) is better than the remake Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005). The remake came out when I was a kid, so there's some nostalgia there. The design of the remake is a lot more compelling, but I think it's missing some of the heart that the original movie has. Gene Wilder is a way better Willy Wonka than Johnny Depp, but who knows? Maybe everyone's favorite heartthrob Timothee Chalamet will shock the world with his interpretation of Wonka in Wonka (2023).
Most movies have a definitive version, and for Willy Wonka, it's gotta be the 1971 version. But some rare movie remakes shine much brighter than their original version.
