At what point is lost stock value worth more than the last shreds of dignity and morale of your workers? Unsurprisingly, for many employers, the answer to that question is "Greater than $0."
Anyone who has worked in retail has experienced an employer who insists any and all missing stock must be the result of theft. It's a really enlightening conversation to have with an employer that reveals how that employer truly feels about their employees beneath the facade of family and pizza parties.
I've had regional managers who insisted staff were stealing before a five-minute investigation revealed a widespread system error that duplicated incoming stock on employee orders. And that's the truth of it; there can be any number of things that result in a discrepancy outside of employee theft, and turning to theft as a first solution for inventory inconsistencies is a surefire way to ensure that your employees have zero engagement with the business.
This employee shared a memo from their employer that takes this lack of trust a step further by declaring that all employees were to be subject to searches, including body searches and personal belongings. It, of course, has drawn the ire of the internet, but the true story might be even sadder. The original poster returned in the comments (item #3) to share the story about the employer's daughter, that might be driving this behavior.
