'People don't quit jobs. They quit managers.': Server considers quitting once happy job when they get a new micromanaging manager

A terrible job can be made tolerable by the people you have around you, and that's one of the hidden beauties of working in service and retail.

When facing the fire and brimstone of these industries, your relationships with like-minded coworkers and managers can quickly strengthen into unbreakable bonds — forged through mutual suffering.

One of the key players in this development is the manager. Their attitude, demeanor, personality, and general outlook can drastically change the way even the worst job feels for the better. It's funny how much the same repetitive task or the latest instance of customer abuse can become less tedious or jarring when you have the general feeling that you're contributing to something — that it's taking you somewhere. 

On top of this, it's great working with someone who you actually click with; who has your best interests, as well as your growth and success, at heart; and who trusts and empowers you to make your own decisions without constantly breathing down your neck.

Other coworkers fit into this too. Great camaraderie and interest in mutual success can make working on a team a pleasure, whereas having someone who is going out of their way to be petty and going out of their way to make your life a living hell can make you want to leave an otherwise good role.

This veteran server enjoyed their job for a long time, noting their two “exceptional managers." But a new incoming manager has been micromanaging them, even interrupting them while they're talking to a table of guests. The general treatment they have been receiving has driven them to the point that they are considering resigning.
