Anyone who travels frequently has had their luggage go missing at some point… and anyone who has had their luggage go missing at some point has experienced the anxiety of having their valued personal possessions locked in a suitcase in who-knows-where and with who-knows-who.
Airlines are never helpful at quelling these fears; their vague assurances and unwillingness to acknowledge the existence of a problem leave us with no answers wondering what cruel fate has befallen our precious goods. In my experience, you're just handed a receipt with a claim number and sent on your merry way.
More often than not, your suitcase will turn up unscathed; sometimes, it will arrive weeks later, looking like it has taken a round trip through Jurassic Park. Still, this is better than when it doesn't turn up at all; in these instances, there's nothing you can do but kiss your favorite shirts and your teacup from Grandma Joan goodbye and hope for better next time.
One can't help but wonder what happens to these missing suitcases, and the airlines would have you believe that they (still) aren't at fault and (still) offer no apology or explanation.
I like to think that these poor suitcases have been ejected out the back of the plane somewhere over the Bermuda Triangle and have come to rest in the lost city of Atlantis, where they reside peacefully with Tupac Shakur and D. This Twitter user chronicled the adventures of their "missing" suitcase, which they had cleverly tracked with an air tag, to a residential apartment complex, where it then proceeded to make multiple trips to a shopping mall and a Mcdonald's. All's well that ends well, and things might not have been as nefarious as they first seemed in this case.
