'He called legal on me': Bad boss cheaps out on Christmas bonus and tries to fire worker after they quit for a competitor

Somewhat more depressing than not receiving a Christmas bonus is the fact that the joke in Christmas Vacation relies upon the idea of a Christmas Bonus being an expected compensation for profit the worker has generated above expected thresholds for that financial year. Fast forward 33 years, and the practice has eroded so significantly across industries that it's not even something that a lot of workers expect anymore, and, as a result, the joke, if told today, would not land the same way. The standard relationship between workers and their employers has changed so significantly that any additional revenue just gets added to the bottom line without a second thought.

Anyways, digressing back to the thread at hand. In a situation that is oddly reflective of the one that plays out in Christmas Vacation, this worker was completely stiffed of a Christmas bonus by their employer. As the situation unfolded, their feelings of disrespect led them to find a new role with a competitor and resign from their current one. This escalated and led to the boss calling legal and HR in an attempt to strong-arm the employee into not taking the role.
