Weekly Internet Roundup: AI Goes Big, Words Go Goblin Mode, and No More Bones Days

Hello. We are here to talk about the week on the internet again. It is getting to that end of year list time, and many of the things listed here follow that summary of achievements vibe that people so love to trot out during the festive season. It's pretty meta, really. While this update might not be as controversial as a Pitchfork Best Albums list, here's hoping it still has some entertainment value.

It's a Bones Day Forever Now

RIP, Noodle the pug. 2021's viral sensation has passed away at the age of 14. Noodle originally became famous through the TikTok of his owner, Jonathan Graziano. His videos based on a simple premise: whether it was a Bones day or not. Having bones (Noodle was standing up after being picked up) meant it was time to get up and go, no bones (flopping back down) was a free pass to chill out.

It's not much of an exaggeration to say that at one point, thousands of people hinged their daily decisions on Noodle's bones. Thoughts and prayers to everyone whose mental stability hinges on adorable animals on TikTok.

AI Chatbot Son Or AI Portrait Daughter?

This month on the internet has begun with a distinct theme, as two AI sensations have grabbed the public attention. The first of these was ChatGPT, the AI chatbot that promised to be just as good at BS as people are. It also has many other impressive skills, but obviously the times when it was funny are much more important than the slightly scary robot overlord thing.

Less technically impressive, but more aesthetically pleasing, Lensa AI came along to make people into DeviantArt style portraits. Various platforms were awash with the results of this for days on end, and we probably haven't seen the end of it just yet. When the Facebook moms start on it, we'll know that it's finally done.

Goblin Mode Becomes Official

One of the runaway successes in memes this year has been to get many people identifying with being part goblin. Goblin Mode captured the hearts of many earlier this year, giving sh*tposters a new way to describe letting our feral side out when we think that nobody is looking.

Just when we thought the trend had gone gentle into that goodnight, it gained a mini revival earlier this week when an Oxford English Dictionary poll placed it as its word of the year. Yes, it may be two words, and yes, it does kind of come across as a stuffy institution trying to be down with the kids, but at least it gives us something to talk about, you know?

Bill Clinton: Reformed Orthodox Rabbi

When The Game Awards were hosted last night, the surprises didn't really come from the recipients. Instead, all the focus was on Matan Even, a YouTuber who crashed the stage when Elden Ring was announced as the game of the year. Even hijacked the prizegiving speech, taking the microphone after game developers were done and nominating “reformed Orthodox rabbi Bill Clinton” for the award instead.

It's fair to say that this caused some confusion, and naturally birthed many memes. While Even was reportedly arrested, this didn't stop the internet holding him in high esteem. Given the wholesome frenzy surrounding him, it was only be a matter of time before the kid got milkshake ducked — and he soon ran into more controversy when it turned out he had been on Infowars. Despite this, the memes keep on flowing. Sometimes, you can't hold a good prank down.

That's it for another few days. Who knows the things that will be said, and the ridiculousness that will unfold in the near future. In the meantime, we've got all this to consider, or not. Until next time!
