It's surprising just how often this discourse emerges online; it should be common knowledge among employers that they simply can't tell workers that they aren't allowed to discuss their pay. Not only is it not a good idea and encourages employees to discuss their pay, but it's completely illegal in the United States.

Still, the discussion of pay levels the playing field so greatly it's almost no surprise that employers still discourage this in order to retain the upper hand in negotiations.
This employee took to Reddit's r/anitwork subreddit to share their experience of this at work, sharing photos to the popular sub of what appears to be a document reprimanding them for discussing the details of their raise with their coworkers. Readers were outraged and offered their advice and support in the comments.
The “Employee Counseling Report” asserts that:
“You were granted a raise based on new expectations of performance. You have shared this information about your pay with other team members causing a business disruption. Per employee handbook this is a violation of in-subordination standards."
The form then has several sections that the employee is to fill out to repent of their ways, asking them to sign at the end under threat of termination.
