Workplaces seem to have this idea that younger workers will be just fine being underpaid for their work. They're young! They have no mortgage and have "relatively little" expenses compared to us mature adults!
But when you're living in a city where the rent and cost of living are well outside of the wage that you're earning, trying to make a start on the career you've waited so long to begin, it feels like anything, but like you have the "no expenses" your older coworkers are expecting—especially once you've included the student loan repayments you need to make for the degree you got just to get your foot in the door.
Eating ramen, rice, and frozen chicken for four years while earning your degree is stressful enough—but graduating and realizing you're going to be doing the same thing into your thirties is downright depressing.
Our workplace society has a problem with ageism… but it's against young workers who are written off by their bosses due to "lack of experience" but who actually have a lot of new fresh ideas to contribute because they have not yet been beaten down by the system like the rest of us.
The story in the screenshots below was posted to Reddit's r/antiwork subreddit by Redditor u/Old-Telephone-2560. They shared an experience they had at the advertising firm where they worked where their boss repeatedly used their young age as a justification for keeping their pay low and then for cutting their hours.
