It might sound ridiculous to dump someone over something as trivial as a birthday cake, but sometimes there is much more meaning to that cake than meets the eye.
Recently, a woman turned to Reddit to see if she was in the wrong for a spat her and her boyfriend of 10 months got into. It was about a birthday cake. She had been telling him for months that for her birthday she didn't want any presents, she only wanted on thing and it was a pineapple upside down cake from a very specific local bakery. She reminded him of this several times, and even texted him the information about it, like how to order it, days before her birthday to assure it was an easy peasy gift he could get her that would make her happy.
However, come her birthday, he presents her with your run-of-the-mill vanilla grocery store birthday cake. She tried to keep in her disappointment, since he had gotten her a Kindle and tickets to a comedy show. However, the more she thought it, the more she realized those presents were more gifts for him, since they didn't really make sense for her. And all she wanted was that cake and he couldn't even muster up enough care to get her that one little thing. She kept telling herself, "it's just a cake" but she couldn't shake her disappointment and eventually ended up asking him to leave.
He, of course, blew up at her, didn't understand why it was such a big deal, and then had the audacity to ask her to reimburse her on the comedy show "gift" tickets he had bought them. Now she's refusing to pay him back and she is unsure if she is the one in the wrong for that. However, Reddit has her back, and the comment section turns into an enlightening discussion on weaponized incompetence and how this is only the first red flag instance that assures she should brake up with him.
