Increased responsibility deserves increased compensation. Usually, if you're being given more responsibility, it comes with more stress and added workload, which you have achieved by displaying competency, aptitude, and adequate experience—at least in theory.
Unfortunately, at times an employer might try and tell you that they're doing you a favor by bestowing increased responsibility upon you, and why should a favor get you a higher rate of pay? If anything, you should be paying them—they'd argue. It's owing to them that you're receiving this opportunity for growth and experience… You should be thankful.
This is the situation that this worker was facing when their boss was suddenly fired, and the worker was saddled with their boss's responsibility. You might think it would be fair to come to an agreement of increased pay through secondment while they "See how [they] do in this role," but if you think that, you're clearly not this employer.
The worker reached out to one of Reddit's popular workplace communities to ask for advice. See some of the advice they received below.
Next, check out this employee who's promotion was blocked by their boss. They repaid the favor a little further down the road.
