There comes a time in your career when you have to stand up for yourself and stop taking on too much. There's a reason why people say "Don't get too good at your job." Your boss is then going to start assuming that giving you more and more tasks to complete with no increase in pay and no extra time or support to complete these extra tasks.
In this scenario, we have a more specific instance of a toxic manager who clearly had an axe to grind. This IT employee, who shared their tale via Reddit's r/MaliciousCompliance subreddit, had just completed a large migration project with a commendation from the client. Meanwhile, their manager's work wasn't nearly as well-received. However, when it came time for the IT employee's evaluation, he was expecting an A given how stellar the feedback from the client was. Of course, that's not exactly what happened. Instead, his manager and easily manipulated mentor gave the employee a C for "lacking motivation." Unfortunately, the employee had a pre-planned vacation directly following this examination, which was probably not the best look but was of course not his fault. When he returned, the manager gave him a completely impossible and unrealistic task. After voicing numerous times that there was no way this task would be completed by the deadline, his protestations were ignored. When he was then fired upon submitting an incomplete assignment, the employee had all the receipts to gain leverage when negotiating his severance package.
