Cheaters never win… While this lesson might be taught to young children in order to discourage them from cheating, unfortunately, in the world at large, cheaters often do win and have a sizable advantage in the form of the shortcuts they're able to take instead of taking the long road like honest folk. Sure, sometimes they'll be caught, but if they have enough wealth or social status, they may just be given a slap on the wrist and sent on their way.
Cheating in universities is rife, especially in competitive introductory classes for top-level courses at highly-ranked universities where any edge can make a difference as to whether or not a student gets admitted into their degree of choice. In these classes, a single bad result on a single aggressively-grade-curved test can break a student's dreams. So, in order to get an edge, certain communities keep and share records of assignments, tests, and entire courses in order to ensure their associates receive top marks.
This can get a little out of hand, and students who were used to having their success buoyed through less-than-honest means will eventually find that they have to keep up with the dishonesty in order to maintain the charade. Even if they get caught out at higher levels of education, the university may bury it in an effort to save face—just as this professor shared in this story. They caught the students for cheating in their class and punished them by failing them in their course, but the university balked at the chance to further punish and expel the students.
This reminds me of one of my favorite jokes: What do you call a doctor who was bottom of their class in medical school?..
Doctor!
