Quite some time has passed since I've last been fired, but the mortifying memory remains carefully carved into my awkward brain, still causing me to shudder when I think about it.
I'm sure I have told this story before, but for those of you who are new, I shall suck up the embarrassment and retell it. Back in my tyrannical teenage years, I was looking for a job. Sixteen at the time, I wasn't actually all that tyrannical. I liked to think I had the guts to do anything, but the truth is I was actually petrified of basically everything, and although I put on a brave, tough face, my insides were constantly squirming, like worms in dry soil.
One of my friends was working at this fish restaurant and vouched for me with the owner, who she apparently got along with splendidly. Well, that was all good for her, but as time would tell, I would not. The owner, who we shall call Bob for the sake of this post, called me in for an interview. I made sure to tell him on the phone that I was still in school but could offer XYZ shifts. He said, 'Yeah, yeah, that's fine. Everyone working here is still in school'.
Cool, I came in. The interview was in front of Bob's wife, who we will call Carla. The second our eyes met when I stepped through that big wooden door into the main space of the restaurant, I knew she did not like what she saw. As I found out a few moments later, she didn't want to hire any more teenagers and told me that my age was a dealbreaker. I told her that Bob had said it was okay, but she told me to go home. I didn't show it, but I was pretty mad, as I had literally been upfront and honest about my age, and was told to come in anyway. What a waste of time!
Surprisingly, that night, Bob called me and told me I was hired. I tried to explain that his wife didn't want me there, but he brushed it off, scheduling me for a shift the following night. Well, I guess you can imagine how that went. Badly. Very badly. When I arrived, Carla immediately asked what I was doing there. To this day, the miscommunication between those two still makes me cringe. In any case, after I spluttered, 'Bob told me to come in', she let me stay for the shift and didn't say much else, so I didn't know if I was going to continue working there or not. I avoided her all night, as she scared the living daylights out of me.
The next day I got another call from Bob, this time to tell me I was fired for 'fighting with his wife'. As tears ran down my face, I blubbered on the phone, shocked, as I had said exactly ONE sentence to her that whole night. How could I have 'fought' with her? He got angry for insinuating his wife would lie, and that was that. The phone call ended with me probably sobbing, and him being as rude as possible to a sixteen-year-old. If Bob reads this, I hope your restaurant didn't make it.
