'[I got] fired because I wouldn't pet [a] customer's dog': Contractor gets fired for not petting a client's dog when client lies about the exchange
There are a lot of reasons to get fired from a job: being late, failing consistently to do basic tasks or meet KPIs, and being difficult to work with are some of the most common. However, you probably wouldn't expect to lose your job for expecting a client to follow basic common courtesy and for expecting your employer to respect your basic safety requirements.
The thing about our pets is that while we love them to death and they can do no wrong to others, they're just another unpredictable animal whose nature is unknown. And that's pretty fair; some animals, dogs specifically by nature, regard strangers with suspicion and behave much differently towards them than their own humans. So owners need to keep in mind that while Snuffy is adorable and loves snuggles at home, he's still a 200 lb mastiff when you take him out of it.

Even when they're in your own home, if there are strangers in your home providing a service for you, you need to keep your pets well away from them so that they can do their work—even if your pets are the most friendly animals in existence. This is why I honestly do not envy anyone whose job involves going into stranger's homes—humans, by nature, are uniquely bizarre creatures, and while each of us is comfortable in our own home, some of us are overly comfortable—and a select number of us are animals ourselves with the way we live before our pets are even factored into the equation.
This contractor worked for an air duct cleaning company and was given a job at a house while the homeowner was absent, but the homeowner's 80-year-old mother and 40-year-old brother were home. Also present were two large bulldogs who had clearly been neglected in their hygiene, one of whom followed and barked at the contractor throughout the entire four-hour cleaning process. The homeowner's brother kept insisting that the contractor pet the dogs, claiming that it would cause them to leave him alone, but, on account of their hygiene, the contractor repeatedly declined.
Eventually, the contractor asked the homeowner's brother to put the dogs away as they were about to start using strong chemical cleaning agents. They felt their request had been voiced reasonably and were surprised when they were later called into HR on account of a complaint that the client had lodged. The contractor was surprised to find that the complaint was used as grounds for terminating their employment.
