Our physics exams were accidentally thrown out

Dear 15200 students, There's no easy way to say this. If you took your final exam from Dec. 12-14, the testing center accidentally threw out your exam packet.
  • 04
This is obviously an extremely disappointing development, and I have escalated this to the Dean of the School of Science. A meeting will take place later this week, in part to determine what changes should be made to the testing center's operating procedure.

But for now, we are stuck with the situation in hand. You now belong to two groups: the 'packets' and the 'lost packets.' After considering several options and consulting with other faculty, here is what we will do. I will calculate your final exam grade two ways and you will get the best of the two. This applies to everyone, both 'packets' and 'lost packets.'

Scoring Method 1: If your exam packet is lost (i.e. you took your exam on Dec. 12-14), you have the option to schedule a fifteen minute Zoom meeting with me where I will ask you basic questions about your process of solving the free response problems. I will then assign partial credit based on our discussion. If I do have your exam packet (i.e. you took your exam on Dec. 15-16), I will grade your exam as usual.

pineapple-fiend 16 hr. ago Oh nah I would literally cry. I'm glad they're not making you retake the final 10.3k Reply Share sheepman39 OP. 16 hr. ago I would just accept the L at that point. I'm already home and forgot all of physics

Chavestvaldt 15 hr. ago sounds like the faculty is handling it pretty well though. the one time this ever happened in my physics dept the professor whose class it was for was like "lol that " and just had us come in and retake it on the weekend

sheepman39 OP. 15 hr. ago Oh totally agree, my prof is very chill and understanding about life. Also the dorms are all closed sooo good luck getting people back. I just really want to know how it even happened. We use the same procedure for the past 5 tests and now this happens?

Haunting_Lemon303 16 hr. ago What is scoring method 2 2.7k Reply Share sheepman39 OP 16 hr. ago . "Scoring Method 2: For each free response question, I'll award 10 points for a wrong answer and 30 points for a right answer, with no exceptions." And you'll get the best score out of whatever. Not great but it's the best prof can do

Rhuarc33 14 hr. ago . Imagine failing the class because you only got partial credit for your final exam which you took and absolutely aced.

Dziadzios 10 hr. ago And then failed the Zoom call questions because of stress or social anxiety.

sheepman39 OP. 13 hr. ago. edited 3 hr. ago So to clarify a few things: • We can't just go back and retake it since break already started and the dorms are closed down. Scoring Method 2: For each free response question, I'll award 10 points for a wrong answer and 30 points for a right answer, with no exceptions. And you'll get the best score out of whatever.

    • The way that the exam works is that multiple choice and free response questions are given online with answers submitted online. For FRQs, most of the points comes from showing your work since it is easy to get the number off, but have a sound method. The work you show is so much more important than what the final answer is. Without the packets, theres no way for graders to know what you know

    • The testing center that messed this all up is a separate entity from my prof and had no control over it. This is the 6th or so exam this class has taken with the exact same format and procedure and so they've learned how to handle them at this point. Incident like this never happened before • For this exam, the FRQs are worth 30 points each

    • I believe my professor is doing all that he can given the circumstances. I agree that taking the averages of the previous tests would have been nice, but giving out 100%s is not feasible since this is a core class and if you don't understand this, you won't understand the other core classes. It ____ but its for the best

EDIT: 15200 refers to the course number, not the number of students UPDATE: One of my friends (who usually does excellent) got done with her zoom meeting and got like 148/150 after explaining a question. My prof emailed me trying to hunt down one of my friends to schedule a zoom appointment. Said friend is overseas right now sooo..... I'll be sure to put an update here on what happens with grades and whatnot.

SensationalSavior 13 hr. ago I had this happen when taking a materials science final. The professor just said screw it and gave everyone 100% for the final lol. His TA accidentally threw away the pile of tests because he wanted to get home for Christmas break early. Thanks Martin, you a real one.

TypicalJeepDriver user reports: This man is a 14 hr. ago | ... that. My professors in HS and College would say something along the lines of "So some of your exams were thrown out. So what we're going to do is take your average grade in the class and add 15% to that for your final, as I know you've studied hard to make good grades. If you feel that you would have done better than 15% over your average grade in the class on the final exam, we can meet on a student by student basis.
  • 20
Please note that if you would like to challenge the 15% over your average grade, you will be questioned on the material and based on that meeting, your grade me be raised a few points OR LOWERED on the final exam down to what your average grade was in the class. This is at your own risk."

sheepman39 OP 14 hr. ago The temptation to share this with my prof is high

Ornery-Tea-795 14 hr. ago I would just give everyone a 100% at that point. 373 . Weak 14 hr. ago Reply Share Blackberry1539. I had a terrible professor who messed up grades, forgot quizzes, didn't know the answer to questions, and was just a moron. End of the semester he just gave everyone a B+. ●●●
