A joke?.. In this economy?! Regardless, you know it's a good joke when it's so good that HR wants to hear it.
It's no secret that employers can be a little sensitive to derogatory statements about the quality of the work environment that they're providing for their workers—even if those statements are completely irrefutably accurate. This usually involves remuneration but also extends to other aspects of the workplace culture and environment. Basically, the method of operation in these workplaces usually relies on workers not talking about how bad things are as if the collective silence on the subject somehow negates the collective suffering of the workforce.

The more toxic the workplace, the more likely they're going to enforce this, acting as if you've betrayed them, the benevolent employer, should you ever criticize them for anything—even if you happen to provide honest feedback when they've specifically asked for it. They'll find ways to ostracize and get rid of these workers, pretending that they're the problem and punishing them for being dissatisfied, giving meaning to the saying, “Beatings will continue until morale improves.”
Well, that's kind of what was happening in this post, when this guy made a mockery of the office's “White Elephant” gift exchange with a harmless joke that was taken in completely the wrong manner.
