When we usually think of "quitting the gym," it's usually nothing like this waking nightmare…
We often expect those in a position of authority to have some sense of (and appreciation for) the effects that wielding that authority might have on others. Unfortunately, that's just not really how the world works, and you're more likely to find that the person with a position of authority should have never even been in that position in the first place. It turns out and really should be no surprise, that delivering high sales or high productivity doesn't really make you a good manager or leader. Yet, responsibility over other people is almost always the next step up the promotion ladder for successful, productive workers, regardless of their interpersonal skills. And that's even before we consider the people who get promoted because of who they know or who they're related to rather than how they perform in their roles.

So, you end up with people who have no business holding authority over other people in positions where they are managing other people, and when their ineffective management skills create problems in the workplace, their subordinates are left without recourse, seeing as most often the manager's manager will take their side. At that point, all the worker can really do is quit, which is why most people leave their jobs because of issues with their boss.
This worker's situation was no different, and it appears that they found themselves in a situation where their coworker was being granted "unofficial" managerial responsibilities over them by the owner of the gym where they worked—the wannabe manager clearly relishing the chance to wield authority over their fellow team members.
According to the resignation letter they posted to this popular online community, this was what led them to their decision to quit their job on the spot, without giving notice, after no longer being able to tolerate the poor treatment from their “manager” and the gym owner's unwillingness to step in.
The community rallied behind the original poster, offering their condolences and advice, some offering criticism of the posted resignation letter.

The photo of the worker's resignation letter (below), which they shared with the popular online community, reads as follows:
11 Feb 2024
[Owner],
This is my resignation letter.
The original plan was to give you my two weeks closer to the end of February to provide you with ample time to find a replacement, but due to recent events I have decided to relinquish my employment effective immediately. Never have I had a "manager" - if that's what [coworker] actually is? - insult me so brazenly before a boss who simply refused to defend his employee. When [coworker] told me we needed to have a meeting during my shift on Tuesday, thus ensuring I am present, I here." This could not have possibly anticipated it would be because I am the "biggest is an actual quote she said in front of you to me. When I looked to you for support, you just played it off like it was a completely normal thing to say. I have never spoken to anyone there this way. In fact, I often go out of my way to praise others, often to the extent that I work harder to pick up the slack so I don't have to cause conflict. But you completely failed to defend me in this moment. What she said was disgusting, and not even the first time she has acted entitled and despicable.
My God, to allow a coworker- let alone a manager- speak to an employee this way? Even if they claim to be joking? I could not fathom this as a leader. [Owner], I understand you have years of experience in the fitness industry, but I have years of experience in another sector- the United States Army, an industry forged by respect. I certainly can play around with people I respect, but [coworker] is not this. She is narcissistic, lazy, and above all else, a bully. She has manipulated her way into your management yet you still also refuse to provide her any authority- please make your mind up before more people leave.
This had already upset me enough before I realized you had scheduled me for a Friday- a day I do not work, did not ask to work, and was never informed I would work. How could we possibly be expected to communicate to you effectively when you refuse to communicate to us?
The truth is, I care too much about this gym. I thought perhaps you knew this about me until you angrily informed me I needed to "care more" about the gym- a crushing blow to someone who loved [this gym] with her whole heart. The decision to leave is not an easy one, specially considering I intended to cover [another coworker's] shift Sunday, but unfortunately this work environment is significantly affecting my mental health.
Hopefully you'll understand in a few weeks when you realize what a gym really looks like without care. Mail my last paycheck, please; I wish [this gym] the best.
